The Brava Theater Academy
The beauty in course work at BTA is participants are constantly interacting with youth from other ethnic and economic backgrounds. BRAVA programs attract youth of color, girls, foster youth and those at risk to dropout or become involved in the juvenile justice system as well as youth who are actively pursuing theatre arts careers. Historically classes have been comprised of 95% youth of color and 66% young females.
Brava Theater Academy is most interested in exposing youth to the opportunities theater arts can create. Whether the opportunity is to escape home and make believe, pursue the dream of writing a play, learn skills to cope in diverse environments or simply start a new way of looking at the world, BTA is an extraordinary theatre program in an extraordinary city.
We run several programs at the Brava Theater Academy. Current BTA Programs

Women’s Playwriting Workshop at Brava! for Women in the ArtsFounded in 2007, the Women’s Playwriting Workshop welcomes writers of all levels to learn about character, plot, back-story, dialogue, scene structure and all of the other elements that go into creating work for the stage. Sessions range from five weeks (in summer) to 10 weeks (fall and spring) in length; the longer sessions culminate with a staged reading of student work. Each three-hour meeting features a lesson in craft (using excerpts from established plays), and a writing exercise, followed by reading of students’ scenes. Professional actors are brought in each week to read student work; actors and directors also participate in the final staged reading, which is open to the public. ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR |
