CURRENT YOUTH PROGAMS
Glass to Diamonds Brava Theater Academy in association with UCSF National Center of Excellence in Women’s Health.Join the Brava Theater Academy as it celebrates its Young Women’s Acting Ensemble Glass to Diamonds! This one-of-a-kind arts outreach program was cultivated by BTA’s Head of Education Raelle Myrick-Hodges in collaboration with the UCSF’s National Centers of Excellence in Women’s Health and the New Generation Health Clinic. This project was formed to empower young women as they combine theater arts & science to create dynamic peer to peer education around reproductive health in our schools and community. The Glass to Diamonds ensemble creates original works of monologues, scenes that discuss subjects such as reproductive health, healthy relationships, peer pressure, violence prevention, and gender power! This is a 6-10 week program beginning in January 2011 which pays its participants. Running Crew Program Our longest running program is the San Francisco Running Crew program, the best behind-the-scenes program available to youth. We recruit San Franciso youth and provide them with hands-on technical training in theater production. Geared toward youth ages 14-20, this program provides basic understanding of the back end of a theatrical production from stage carpentry, lighting design/production, scenic painting and sound equipment instruction. Participants walk away with valuable skills in the theatre arts that can be used later in life.
Upon successfully graduating, participants can be placed in interships and are assisted in finding employment within the theatre arts community. More than 400 particpants have graduated from Brava Theater Academy’s SF Running Crew program. Many have continued to work in the arts as directors, designers, stage managers and executive directors of programs they have created. Join in the fun, the learning and the team effort to create theater! This program pays a stipend to its participants. This is a 6-10 week program beginning in January 2011. Apprenticeship Program: Geared toward recent graduates and yougn adults interested in seriously exporing theater production as a possible career. The mission of the Brava Apprenticeship Program is to cultivate well rounded theatre artists in artistic, production and arts administration. The intention is to have selected candidates be given the opportunity to comprehensively understand the theatre arts in its entirity - to understand that one department only works in correlation with other departments. Other Youth Classes Available through the Brava Theater Academy (Currently Not Available) Acting I – Fundementals
This class is to provide a fun basis introduction to acting for the stage. Participants works on contemporary monologues and scenes. Pieces to perform are selected from an array of writers of color and female playwrights allowing p0articpants to be exposed to artists not part of the regular American theater canon. Summer participants in the program are privy to working on their projects on the Mainstage Theater at Brava Theater Center. This course is free to its participants. Acting II – Studio
The clase is to provide young actors who have had more substantial acting course to begin to study acting more thoroughly. Utilizing a holistic approach to acting, the class work will entail vocal development, skills to analyze text, and characterization exercises. Acting Studio Participants produce a full length work at the end of their seasonal sessions. Audtions required for this class – 2 minute monologue of choice (contemporary).
Adult Programs at Brava Theater Academy
BTA is currently in the process of creating a extensive Adult Master Class Series to be available through the theatrical season. Currently, BTA provides the following class for Adults:Women’s Playwriting Workshop at Brava! for Women in the ArtsFounded in 2007, the Women’s Playwriting Workshop welcomes writers of all levels to learn about character, plot, back-story, dialogue, scene structure and all of the other elements that go into creating work for the stage. Sessions range from five weeks (in summer) to 10 weeks (fall and spring) in length; the longer sessions culminate with a staged reading of student work. Each three-hour meeting features a lesson in craft (using excerpts from established plays), and a writing exercise, followed by reading of students’ scenes. Professional actors are brought in each week to read student work; actors and directors also participate in the final staged reading, which is open to the public.
